European Union – Government and legal system
Cyprus became a full member of the European Union on 1st May 2004.
The structure of government is similar to that of other European Union
Countries where human rights, political pluralism and private property
are safeguarded.
The legal system is based on English Law, and is harmonious with
European Union. All statutes regulating business matters and
procedures are based essentially on English law.
Economy and standard of life
Cyprus has an open free market economy. The standard and quality of
life is very high. The island has excellent telecommunications, air
and port connections.
Excellent banking facilities are also available.
Location
Cyprus is situated in the eastern Mediterranean. The island’s total
area is 9,251sq.kms. The island enjoys the best type of Mediterranean
climate with about 300 days of sunshine per year.
Population
The population of Cyprus is estimated to be 770.000 with Greek –
Cypriots representing approximately 80%.
Languages
Greek, English and Turkish are the official languages. The English
language is widely spoken and understood, and is widely used in
commercial and government sectors.
